Drivers told using path as shortcut could end in tragedy

Drivers told using path as shortcut could end in tragedy

Drivers are placing lives at risk by taking their vehicles up a pedestrian path near Markinch.

Several cars and 4x4s are reported to have been using the walkway between Tofthill and Balbirnie Golf Club, alarming regular users of the route.

Access was obtained after a padlock was stolen from a protective gate, with drivers taking advantage and using the stretch as a shortcut.

And coinciding with recent bad weather, parts of the route have been turned in to a mudbath by those who have taken their vehicles on the path.

Councillor John Beare, who lives in Markinch, said: “No-one should expect to see vehicles on a pedestrian path through Balbirnie Park, particularly a path that is used by families with their children.

“I’m horrified that anyone would think it was a suitable place to drive.”

He continued: “The flooding of the path, making it virtually impassable at a couple of stretches, has been an ongoing issue for several months.

“I’ve asked officers to consider bringing forward a long-term solution to the waterlogged path.”

Jim Leitch, Fife Council’s manager for parks, streets and open spaces, said: “The padlock to secure the gate at the path from Toft Hill to Balbirnie has unfortunately been removed or vandalised, which has allowed vehicles to access the area.

“This, and the recent wet weather, has made the path a little muddier than usual. However, it’s still open and passable.

“A new padlock and chain is being fitted to the gate and after the worst of the weather has passed, we will reassess the site and see if it needs cleaned up further.”
