Montrose boss Paul Hegarty has extended training facilities to former Dundee United and Scotland centre-half Garry Kenneth.
The 28-year-old is on the look-out for a new club after a move to Latvian side Skonto Riga did not work out.
Hegarty has told Kenneth he would like him to join the Gable Endies but the situation is complicated by the fact the player is still awaiting his formal release from Skonto.
The manager said: “Garry has been training with us for the last few weeks since he returned from Latvia.
“He is still waiting for his official release from Skonto Riga and we know these things can often take a bit of time to come through.
“I have spoken to Garry and have told him I would like to sign him.
“It would be great to have him on board but we will just have to wait and see once he receives his release.”
Hegarty’s side suffered a setback in Saturday’s Angus derby with Arbroath who won 3-1 at Gayfield with two of their goals coming from Bobby Linn.
The manager admitted that was especially disappointing as his players had been well warned in advance about the Red Lichties’ danger man.
He said: “Gary Fraser picked up an ankle injury against Arbroath but I have spoken to him and he says he should be OK for this weekend.
“I was obviously disappointed with the result and the goals we lost against Arbroath.
“They were probably the better team on the day and if you give Bobby Linn time and space, he will punish you.
“I couldn’t fault the lads’ application and effort but they failed to heed the warnings we had given them and we paid the price.”
