Car vandalism is driving Dundee man out of his home

Steven with his car, which was scratched so badly by vandals that he thinks it will cost around £1,000 to repair.

Vandals caused an estimated £1,000 worth of damage to a car parked on a Dundee street in which vehicles are regularly damaged and set on fire.

Steven Wrycza said life has got so bad in the 15 months he has lived in Arthurstone Terrace that he now wants to move.

The 23-year-old spent £10,000 on his Ford Fiesta and takes great pride in keeping it immaculate by washing it every week and keeping the interior clean and tidy.

However, the aid worker was left horrified earlier this week after discovering a vandal had gone round his car and scratched it so severely that he fears he will be unable to pay for the repairs.

Insisting that he has no enemies and has no idea why he was targeted, Steven claims that a number of similar vandal attacks on nearby cars have left him desperate to move out of the city centre.

He said: “I found my car like that when I went out in the morning to go to work.

“I paid £10,000 for the car and I think it might cost about £1,000 to have it resprayed.

“I didn’t think there was anyone who hated me enough to want to do this to my car.”

He continued: “I was really shocked because it’s very badly damaged it’s right down to the metal work.

“There’s not really any antisocial behaviour in my block and I don’t have any issues with my neighbours.

“I’ve called the police, but I’m angry that this has happened.”

Steven moved to the area 15 months ago to be close to his work and friends.

Now, after a spate of similar attacks, he rues the day he made the move and is keen to move away.

He said: “My friend next door, Callum, was going to work one day and there was a drug user trying to break into a car.

“Callum carried out a citizen’s arrest and the police eventually came and took the guy away.

“There was also a girl I used to work with who’s car was actually set on fire.

“Her car was parked in the same place where mine was attacked.

“Things just seem to be getting worse. I want to move away.

“I had no issues in my last house, but I missed the city centre and decided to move here. I wish I never had now.

“I don’t know if there is any point in paying £1,000 to get my car resprayed because I think there’s a chance it could happen again.”

Local councillor Craig Melville moved quickly to condemn the vandals and called for their arrest.

He said: “It’s difficult to comprehend what goes through these people’s heads.

“By large this is a safe area and is well policed, but I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and let the police know.

“It’s important these people are brought to justice.”
