Perth traffic lights ‘risking safety’ of pedestrians

Willie Wilson has asked the police and the council to look into the problem of the traffic lights.
Willie Wilson has asked the police and the council to look into the problem of the traffic lights.

The safety of pedestrians is being put at risk by traffic lights, says a Perth councillor.

Willie Wilson, who represents the Perth South ward, said he has been contacted by constituents about the lights at the junction of Burghmuir, Letham, Jeanfield and Cornhill roads.

He says he has notified the police and the council of the problem, and feels action must be taken, particularly with some cars “jumping” the lights.

“This is a very busy junction and is controlled by traffic lights,” he said. “It is also used by a large number of pedestrians throughout the day, especially at school times.”

He continued: “The road geometry, width of the road and the distance between the traffic lights leads to some difficulty in the timing of the pedestrian phases.

“Residents have raised with me the problem of cars ‘jumping’ the lights, and this might be to some extent deliberate but also partly inadvertent due to the layout of the junction.”

Mr Wilson said he has raised the matter with Police Scotland, and claimed officers carried out speed checks in the area.

He added: “I have also asked the roads service of Perth and Kinross Council to look at the phasing of the lights to ascertain if any adjustment to the phasing would help to improve road safety.

“This is an important part of the safe routes to school for pupils going mainly to Perth Academy,” he said.

“In addition, motorists deserve consideration of appropriately phased lights so that they feel confident they can use the junction properly and safely in the future.”

Mr Wilson said he has asked council officers to report back on what the options are to “improve” the safety for both pedestrians and motorists at this location.
