Kyle Letheren was warned by his new team-mates when he signed for Dundee that Dens could be the best and the worst ground in the country to play in.
The big keeper’s boss John Brown was incensed following Saturday’s 3-0 win over Dumbarton at a section of the home support for booing and abusing him and the players.
“Bomber” didn’t miss his target saying: “I was disgusted by the reaction of a section of the fans. When we were 1-0 up and expecting everybody to get behind us, we were getting abuse.
“There are no easy games in this league and the fans have to realise that. So I would like our fans en masse to get right behind the team.
“They can go a long way to helping us come the end of the season but I was disappointed in the reaction from a number of them.
“The majority of them were fine and the away support has been fantastic but there is an element at Dens who need to be asked do they really want their team to succeed?”
The home fans’ patience had been tested, as they had to wait until the second half for the goals to come from Peter MacDonald (2) and Kevin McBride, but Letheren said it wasn’t until recently that he fully realised just how fickle a section of the Dundee support can be.
He said: “I signed here in June and a few of the boys said to me that Dens can be the best ground in the league to play in or the worst.
“I didn’t get it then but I saw it for the first occasion against Cowdenbeath two weeks ago when we needed them, they were booing us.
“However, at times against Dumbarton they were brilliant. They also follow us in their hundreds if not thousands and we can even have more fans on the road than the home team do.
“They have been great that way and they can definitely help us win this league. It would be superb if teams found Dens a really intimidating place to come to.”
