Glenrothes bridge work to cause a fortnight of diversions

Work on the bridge is due to last two weeks.
Work on the bridge is due to last two weeks.

Repair work to a Glenrothes road bridge will mean a fortnight of diversions for drivers, it has been revealed.

Engineers will begin work at the River Leven Bridge this month, after one of the cables suspending the structure was exposed to the elements following a welding failure.

A formal inspection of the bridge will be carried out at the same time, meaning that crews will be on site for up to four weeks.

The busy B969 will be closed daily for a period of two weeks, resulting in potentially large diversions for hundreds of motorists.

A statement from Fife Council said: “Failure of a plastic weld allowed the sleeve to become detached and slip down, exposing the individual strands which make up the cable.

“This exposure is allowing water to penetrate the cable and collect at the bottom anchorage at deck level. Although this failure is not serious and is not affecting the strength of the bridge in any way, the repair is necessary to prevent any future deterioration due to this water penetration.

“The contractor has programmed the work to keep the road closures to a minimum.”

Road closures will take place from 9.15am to 5pm on every working day between Wednesday and Wednesday October 16. The bridge will remain open outwith these hours.

The window for closure could be extended, however, in the event of significant periods of bad weather.
