Game of Thrones star treading the boards at the Byre Theatre

Game of Thrones fans can see one of their heroes in St Andrews this week.
Daniel Portman, who plays Podrick Payne in the hit TV series by HBO, stars in a show at the Byre Theatre. He is cast in Philoctetes, part of the A Play, A Pie and A Pint lunchtime series.
Glasgow-born Portman, 23, whose actor father Ron Donachie attended Madras College, was pleased Sophocles’ drama brought him back to the town he often visited as a child. “It was a good script and the fact that it was going to come here was a bonus,” he said.
When the show was in Glasgow, many of the audience were drawn by Portman’s Game of Thrones fame, but that is less so in St Andrews.
He said: “That’s nice for me, as it means they are coming to see a piece of theatre rather than coming to see a character they know from television.”
