Cool heads will be needed in the Championship run-in and one man who has shown he can keep his nerve is Dundee’s Ryan Conroy.
Conroy was put right on the spot the last time the Dark Blues played Queen of the South, who are visitors to Dens Park tonight.
He remained calm that mid-February day in Dumfries to slot home the penalty that gave his team three valuable points.
That 1-0 win was viewed as a massive result for Dundee and the pressure will, if anything, be greater this evening.
Conroy said: “It will be another difficult game against Queen of the South because they are pushing for the play-offs.
“Everyone has something to play for in the league just now. We would take another 1-0 win if need be, just like when we beat them down there the last time.
“We know the final seven games are going to be really hard and it has reached that stage of the season.
“We would take winning ugly in the run-in. The most important thing is just getting the three points that’s the bottom line.
“If you don’t get the performance, you don’t really worry about that.
“We did that well down at Dumbarton. It wasn’t the greatest of performances but we all stuck together and got there in the end.
“We know there’s not much room for error. We are a point ahead of Hamilton so it is still in our own hands, which is the good thing.
“If we keep on winning our games then we will win the league.”
While the away win over the Sons on Saturday was a welcome boost, it is still apparent the dismal draw with Raith Rovers in the last home game is hanging over the club.
Conroy said: “I don’t think we started the Raith game well last week. We let them play a bit, which can happen, and they were delighted to get a point in the end.
“Their game plan was to get a point and that doesn’t help us when they set up like that.
“Also, you could feel where the fans were coming from against Raith but not every goal is going to come in the first 25 minutes. We know we are going to have to break teams down.
“It was 0-0 against Dumbarton until the last few minutes when we scored the winning goal. It was a good show of character.”
Manager Paul Hartley conceded that there is plenty of room for improvement from that display against Raith.
He said: “I think the key is handling the pressure better than we did last week. I think we do have to play better than we did against Raith.
“We have to start the game better and I think the players know that but overall they’ve been good. Their attitude has been first class.”
Dundee will be without midfielder Kevin McBride (head knock) and Kyle Benedictus (back) but Iain Davidson will be fit.
