The trial of a South African woman accused of the murder of Monifieth grandmother Sandra Malcolm has been delayed again.
Sheree Prince has already had her trial at Muizenberg Magistrates Court delayed to allow for an inquiry into her fitness to stand trial.
Following a prolonged investigation, the 18-year-old thought to be from the Citrusdal, north of Cape Town was arrested and appeared before Muizenberg Magistrates Court on Monday May 11.
Mrs Malcolm, originally of Monifieth, was found with multiple stab wounds in her Cape Town home in April.
The teenager, who has been remanded to Pollsmoor Prison, has brought an application to apply for bail and the court has appointed a legal aid lawyer for her, the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa reports.
Eric Ntabazilia from the Prosecuting Authority said: “The matter against Sheree Prince has been postponed to June 10 2015 for bail application.
“The State will oppose bail based on the strength of its case and seriousness of the merits.
“Legal Aid South Africa, which was appointed by the court for her defence, abandoned their request for her mental assessment to determine whether she would be able to stand trial.
“Officials of legal aid consulted with the accused and she was able to follow what was being said to her and there was no need for the request to be taken further.”
Mrs Malcolm, 74, lived in the Lakeside area of Cape Town and was found dead on Sunday April 19 by her grandson. He is believed to have climbed through a bathroom window to investigate after she failed to answer her door.
An autopsy revealed multiple wounds as the cause of death and police earlier confirmed nothing had been taken from the home. Police in the Western Cape have not ruled out the possibility of more suspects.
Western Cape Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said: “The investigation is ongoing and progress is being made. A murder case was opened for investigation. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.”
