Dundee rig maintenance teams say they will listen to noised-up neighbours’ complaints

Bosses at the Port of Dundee have promised to turn down the volume on the Rowan Stavanger rig after 7pm.

It follows complaints that “excessive” sounds could be heard throughout the night and into the morning while the rig undergoes maintenance at the docks.

Sheila Munro, 57, a former teacher, said: “I sleep with my windows open because I like the fresh air and there is constant noise, all the time.

“It is very annoying because the rig has been here for months and the noise is always there.

“It is also very bright and the light shines into my windows at night. It’s like a Christmas tree.”

David Dwyer, 63, a retired painter and decorator, said: “There does seem to be a constant hum at all hours. I knew what I signed up for when I moved near the docks but I do think that sometimes it could be a bit quieter.”

East End SNP councillor Will Dawson said noise is a common issue with the port but he has not received any complaints recently.

A Port of Dundee spokesman said: “The Port of Dundee is unaware of any loud noise emitting from the Rowan Stavanger during the night.

“The rig and its management team are fully aware of the protocols in place around rigs berthed in the port and we will continue to liaise with the rig to ensure there is no noise after 7pm.

“The Rowan Stavanger is in the port for routine maintenance and, like previous rig activity, is a positive economic contributor to the city, as it attracts support services and supplies from local businesses and the community.”

A Rowan Drilling spokeswoman said: “We were not aware there was an issue as we have not received any complaints. However, we will look into the issue in the future.”
