An Angus hospital which shut suddenly earlier this year has been put up for sale by NHS Tayside.
Little Cairnie Hospital in Arbroath will be sold following NHS Tayside board’s approval to dispose of the site.
Four wards once operated at the hospital which specialised in palliative care.
However, NHS Tayside said Little Cairnie is no longer required because a new model of care means more people can stay in their own home.
Rory Ballantyne, of estate agents Ballantynes, said the site would suit a number of uses, including residential homes. He added that the “special site” would not be marketed with an asking price. Instead offers will be invited.
Local campaigner Carol Shand, who raised thousands of pounds for Little Cairnie after her brother Graeme Beattie died there three years ago, said the decision to sell the building was “very sad”.
She added: “Its disposal has been very quick. I just hope the NHS uses the money wisely.
“We have been fighting to keep the hospital open for the last two-and-a-half years to no avail.
“However, NHS Tayside has made big promises for Arbroath Infirmary and they are in the process of getting palliative rooms there.”
A statement from NHS Tayside said a new community-based model of care for South Angus was introduced earlier this year. “The team provides care and support in the patient’s own home and, where possible, avoid hospital admission,” it said.
