After great anticipation, the Dundee Flower and Food festival finally opened to wide fanfare.

The annual event attracted hundreds of visitors on its first day and is expecting to see many more over the weekend.

The Camperdown Park site was packed with flower and food enthusiasts as well as local figures including the Lord Provost Bob Duncan and MSPs Shona Robison and Joe FitzPatrick.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead also attended the opening day to push for Dundee Cake to be given Protected Geographical Indication statuswithin the European Union.

Mr Duncan said: “This year’s Flower and Food festival is phenomenal. The displays are all tip top this is the best festival we have seen yet.”

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “The festival is going from strength to strength. It is great to see thousands of people descending on Camperdown.”

Visitors were treated to scores of stalls from businesses stocking a wide variety of local products, as well as music, food and children’s events.

However, there is still plenty more to come over the weekend.

Opening the festival, Mr FitzPatrick said: “This three-day festival highlights local produce and some of the country’s best chefs.

“There are many interesting activities and events and there truly is something for everyone.

“There is a lot happening here over the next few days and I would like to wish you all a great time visiting.”

Alongside the fine local products and culinary delights on offer, a number of celebrities are also attending the festival, including Great British Bake Off star Paul Hollywood.

Mr Hollywood will be taking two cookery classes today, as well signing copies of his latest book.

Television presenter Christine Walkden is also attending, offering guidance on how to make a container garden, as well as answering any other gardening questions.

The National Vegetable Society of Scotland will also be in attendance over the weekend.

They are hosting their ‘branch championships’, which aim to showcase the very best in Scottish vegetables.

This year’s Children’s Marquee is themed on the Year of Natural Scotland 2013 and features a wild flower meadow as a central display.

Music is a key feature of the event with a number of acts performing, including Boogalusa and Havana Swing.

The West of Scotland Military Wives Choir are also performing on Sunday morning.

After a dry start yesterday, the weather is expected to continue to hold over the weekend with temperatures reaching about 15 degrees.
