Dunfermline Athletic are due to have a look at Dundee United defender Ross Smith in a bounce game although they could yet face competition for his signature.

The 21-year-old has been training with the East End Park club and boss Jim Jefferies plans to run the rule over Smith and another unnamed defender in a closed door fixture.

The Pars would not be able to loan the centre-half under new SPFL rules, as they already have United striker Jordan Moore on loan, but Jefferies has already confirmed he would try to come to some agreement with the Tannadice club to release Smith if it came to it.

However, Peterhead have now suggested they are keen to re-sign the Scotland Under-19 cap and are waiting in the wings if United prefer to go down the loan route again.

Blue Toon boss Jim McInally confirmed he would jump at the chance to take Smith back to Balmoor should a move to East End Park fail to materialise.

McInally said: “I understand that Ross is on trial at Dunfermline, but they may have a problem with signing him.

“I know he had a difficult time on loan at Stenhousemuir this season, but I haven’t forgotten what he did for us. We would certainly be keen on that situation should it come up and I will see if anything develops.

“I would certainly be keen to try and sign another defender this week.”
