Three quick-thinking schoolgirls have been hailed after their bravery alerted firefighters to an impending inferno in Dundee.
The heroines spotted smoke coming from a house and contacted their parents, who rushed to call emergency services.
The girls, Hannah McFarlane, 10, Louise MacCrimmon, 8, and Grace Harris, 6, were alerted to the fire while out playing in the Fintry area of the city.
Now the trio have been honoured at a special event at Kingsway East Fire Station where they manned water pumps and tackled specially set fires.
The youngsters were also handed certificates heralding their efforts.
Hannah revealed she was “quite scared” but was proud she and her friends had been able to help their community.
She said: “We heard an alarm and didn’t know where it was coming from. When we found out we saw loads of smoke and Louise ran to get her dad.”
After trying her hand in the station, Louise said: “The equipment was really heavy but I managed to carry it.”
Hannah said: “I liked seeing the fire engines. It was very exciting.”
The girls’ proud parents were on hand to witness the trio’s big day and revealed that all three could expect a big reward.
Louise’s mum Andrea Craig said: “We’re all really proud of how quickly the girls acted. We’re going to the circus tonight as a reward for Louise.”
Watch manager Fraser Johnson was full of praise for the girls and said their actions were proof that educational work carried out by emergency services is working.
He said: “These girls have obviously been taught correctly and as a group were able to source the location of the fire, knew not to go near it and knew that they had to get their parents.
“This incident could have been a lot worse. This fire had been going for about three hours at the time, so if it wasn’t for the actions of these children the owners could have lost their house.
“I feel it’s important to recognise when members of the community, especially children, show the presence of mind to act in the appropriate way when things go wrong around them.”
