VIDEO: Forth bridges closed for controlled explosion after find at construction site

The Forth Road and Forth Rail Bridges were closed during Wednesday’s evening rush-hour as bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled detonation of what is believed to be old explosives.

The road closed at around 4.45pm with an explosion being heard at around 5pm.

It was then reopened at around 5.30pm but the closure had caused major tailbacks on both sides of the crossing.

The rail bridge was also closed during the operation, causing delays for rail passengers.

The shock discovery was made on the Fife construction site of the new Queensferry Crossing earlier in the afternoon.

Originally the northbound junction 1 at Ferrytoll and roundabout were closed as police investigated the materials, believed to be used in demolition work.

Later Police Scotland, Amey, which operates the Forth Road Bridge, and Traffic Scotland confirmed that officers will close the M90 and bridge in both directions.Have you been caught up in the traffic caused by the bridge closures. Get in touch with us on news@thecourier.co.uk
