Tay road bridge closed to all traffic in high winds

High winds brought chaos for those travelling between Dundee and Fife on Monday night, with the Tay road bridge closed to all traffic.

As the weather worsened throughout the early evening, officials first barred high-sided vehicles from the crossing.

The traffic ban was then extended to all users at around 7.20pm as it was deemed too dangerous for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Motorists faced a lengthy detour, via the A90 and Friarton Bridge, which was itself buffeted by strong winds.

The Tay road bridge reopened to cars only at 10.19pm.

Elsewhere, the Forth, Erskine and Clackmannanshire Bridges were all closed to high-sided vehicles.

The latter restrictions are particularly testing for drivers, as the Clackmannanshire crossing was serving as a diversionary route for regular users of the Kincardine Bridge, which is closed in both directions for overnight roadworks.
