The cull of thousands of chickens has begun following the discovery of bird flu at a Fife farm.
The grim process of gassing thousands of birds started at Craigies Poultry Farm, on the outskirts of Townhill, just days after a “mild strain” of the virus was discovered at the site.
Experts have repeatedly stated that the discovery poses no risk to human health.
But the mass destruction of chickens has been taken as a precautionary measure to prevent further infection.
Around 40,000 birds are believed to be held in sheds at the complex, which is around a mile from Dunfermline.
A large mechanical digger was spotted on site earlier this week, along with gas canisters as preparations were made for yesterday’s cull.
The Courier has already witnessed precautionary measures being put in place at other poultry farms in the region, with disinfecting stations established for visiting vehicles at several sites.
Industry leaders have warned of the need for farmers to remain vigilant and report any concerns to authorities, though a widespread bird flu outbreak is believed to be unlikely.
