The Courier was the first newspaper to recognise the potential of tennis superstar Andy Murray, it has emerged.
In what was clearly a remarkable piece of early talent spotting, The Courier of February 19, 1993, featured the little boy who would one day become Wimbledon, Olympic and US Open champion.
Carefully snipped from a copy of the paper, the yellowing cutting showing her five-year-old son wielding a tennis racket has been lovingly cherished by Andy’s mum Judy.
She has now shared the picture with her Twitter followers saying: “Seriously cute. Andy’s first photo shoot. Age 5. Dundee Courier. Note T-shirt tucked into (too big) shorts.”
As son of coach Judy, the young Andy may have seemed the natural choice as model for The Courier photographer when he dropped in at the Dunblane Sports Centre, little knowing what the future held for the youngster.
Dwarfed by his racket, the caption says he is putting in some practice for a forthcoming competition.
Andy took the revelation in good heart retweeting the picture and commenting “Hair is still as bad!”
The picture was also posted on his official Facebook page, where it was liked by almost 5,000 followers.
