Montrose boss Paul Hegarty praised his players as they romped to a 4-1 win over Berwick Rangers, a result which takes them to second in League Two.
Hegarty said: “That was a tricky game for us as over the last three matches we have not played particularly well and I wasn’t sure how things would go.
“The attitude and application of my players was bang-on. If they do that every game, more often than not they will get the points.
“The teams in this division are much the same and it is sometimes down to who fancies it most.”
Montrose took a grip of the game from the start and on seven minutes, Graham Webster had a header turned round the post. Adam Harwood headed just wide on nine minutes, then two minutes later a piledriver from Ross Campbell was tipped over by keeper Kevin Walker.
The breakthrough came on 17 minutes. Steven Notman pulled down Fraser and he scored confidently from the spot.
Montrose added a second on 45 minutes after a Ryan Ferguson cross was deflected and Fraser put the ball on a plate for Campbell to score.
Berwick got a goal back on 57 minutes when Finn Graham curled home a 25-yard free-kick.
Montrose showed their character to hit back within three minutes. Great play put Scott Johnston to the byeline and his cross was fired home by Webster.
The home side notched a fourth on 80 minutes when Fraser headed in a Ross McCord cross.
The Montrose fans chanted for five and Terry Masson nearly obliged when he was denied by Walker.
The Gable Endies face Lothian Thistle tomorrow in a Scottish Cup replay with confidence high, but Hegarty is taking nothing for granted.
“Thistle deserved a replay and in fact might have won the first game. My players know what is expected of them.”
