A Dundee man has tragically died before he could fulfil his final wish.
Michael McCartney, who was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour in 2011, had hoped to enjoy one last holiday with his loved ones.
To help grant his request, Michael’s family set up an online donations page.
Within weeks of the page going live, generous locals had stumped up almost £2,000.
The family had intended to enjoy a break together at a log cabin retreat in Pitlochry, but sadly, Aberdeen fan Michael passed away before they had the chance.
Michael’s grieving wife, Pauline, was too upset to talk yesterday, but speaking previously to The Courier she praised the generosity displayed by local people.
She said: “It’s absolutely incredible.
“The response has been just amazing.
“I know that Dundee is well known when it comes to giving and helping people, but when it is actually happening to you it’s hard to explain.”
Michael’s daughter, Nicole Dunlop, had inspired people throughout the country with a heartfelt tribute to her Aberdeen-supporting father.
She asked for help in gaining access to a corporate box to allow Michael to watch his team in style.
The Abertay student said previously: “He’s never been one to ask for much and when prompted to tell us what he would like before the worst happens he let us know that after being a loyal Aberdeen FC supporter since he was a child, that he would love to have a private box for one of their games.
“We have tried to contact them privately to see if this is possible but haven’t had much luck.
“My hope is that the power of social media can get this message to them and give my dad one of his final wishes.”
The Pittodrie club later granted the request after hundreds of people, including Dons legend Joe Harper, showed their support.
