Falkirk v Dundee: ‘Asset’ Beattie likely to lead line

Dundee manager John Brown has left the door open to striker Craig Beattie.

Beattie didn’t enjoy the best of debuts for the Dark Blues against Hamilton Accies last weekend, looking short of match fitness before being substituted after less than an hour.

However, with in-form frontman Peter MacDonald currently ill, the former Celtic and Hearts man could get another chance to lead the line against Falkirk.

“Peter MacDonald has been off with a virus so having Craig here gives us extra options,” said Brown.

“He has been working hard this week getting into the daily training routine and he’s right in my thoughts for Falkirk. Craig will come good and we will be topping up his fitness levels in the next few weeks and try to get him up to speed.

“He has a presence and he will be an asset for us.”

Brown is demanding improvement from all his players following a goalless draw at Dens that saw league-leading Accies dominate their hosts for a large chunk of the match.

He wants greater creativity, better passing and sharper finishing, although he is happy with the way the defence has been performing.

“We didn’t play all that well last week against Hamilton,” admitted Brown.

“That’s now four out of five clean sheets in the league but we need to do more in the final third.

“We are working a lot on finishing this week and we have good spirit in the camp. We just have to make sure we start producing in the final third and then we will be in a decent position.

“What I would say is that we are in the mix and this is a league where teams seem to be cutting each others’ throats. Hamilton have been winning quite consistently but there will be points dropped throughout the season.

“For example, you wouldn’t have expected Queen of the South, Falkirk or Alloa to get beaten last weekend but they did and that just shows you there are no easy games.”

You certainly couldn’t call a trip to face the Bairns easy, even though they come into this fixture on the back of a defeat at Cowdenbeath.

“Falkirk are a good, young side so we’ll have to be wary of their strengths,” said Brown.

“They have the boy Phil Roberts on loan from Arsenal as well as Rory Lloyd, who I know from Rangers. If we are off the pace they will hurt us.”
