‘I was really, really cold’ councillor shocked by eight-hour wait in Victoria Hospital

A Fife councillor had to wait for eight hours sitting on a plastic chair after being admitted to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy with severe chest pains.

Peter Lockhart was told there were no blankets available to keep him warm as he shivered until a bed became available.

The Cowdenbeath councillor, who suffers from fibromyalgia, watched on as his trolley was wheeled out of the cubicle he had been assigned, only for it to be replaced a few minutes later.

He said: “If you’re going to keep somebody waiting for that length of time you should at least have a blanket for them. I was told there wasn’t enough.

“My dad had been in the hospital earlier in the year and had the same issue and I’ve since heard from other constituents they’ve also been told there weren’t enough blankets.

“When I raised it at the Community Health Partnership I was told there were plenty of blankets, but that’s not my experience.”

This week’s A&E stats show NHS Fife’s performance is improving, from 81.3% of patients being seen within four hours during the week ending March 8 to 88.9% the following week.

This still falls short of the Scottish Government’s 95% target and serious concerns are still being raised about overstretched staff.

Mr Lockhart said he was taken into hospital at around 4.30pm last month with chest pains after being referred by NHS24. His ambulance arrived within five minutes.

He added: “I waited and waited and waited. It must have been about 8.30 or 9pm by this time and I was really, really cold.

“I managed to catch a nurse who said she was sorry but there were no blankets.

“At about 10pm they came up with a cup of tea and some toast, which was great, but what upset me was they never came back.

“It was the back of 12 before I got into a ward.”

Professor Scott McLean, NHS Fife director of acute services, said: “The hospital does of course have enough sheets and blankets for our patients.

“NHS Fife strives to provide the highest possible standards of care to all of our patients and where concerns are raised we take them seriously and investigate them thoroughly.”
