Dundee’s newest council multi-storey car park has been awarded safer parking status.

Olympia car park opened last year as part of the £31.5 million leisure pool development at East Marketgait/East Whale Lane and has spaces for 500 vehicles.

Bill Campbell, depute city development convener, went along to check out the facilities and inspect the 11 Park Mark certificates for every major facility in Dundee.

“Drivers who choose to leave their cars in any of the main car parks in Dundee can rest easy, since every one of them, including this great new building, has been awarded safer parking status,” he said.

“Getting the Park Mark status for all of our car parks is the result of a combination of factors.

“From the initial design, through construction, on-going maintenance and physical security measures, there really is no excuse for commuters or visitors who come to the city by car to park anywhere else.”

West Bell Street, Hilltown West, Queen Street, East Port, Science Centre East, Science Centre West, Art Centre, Greenmarket, South Tay Street and Gellatly Street have all been assessed recently and each passed with flying colours.

Set up by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland and backed by the Scottish Government, the Park Mark scheme is managed by the British Parking Association and is aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities.

Achieving the Park Mark means Dundee City Council has put in place measures to help to deter criminal activity and anti-social behaviour in its car parks.
