Immigration officers arrest groom at sham wedding in Dundee
ByThe Courier Reporter
A sham wedding in Dundee was disrupted just moments before it was due to start when the groom was arrested by immigration officers on Monday.
A 29-year-old Pakistani man who had entered the country illegally was detained and now faces deportation from the UK.
His would-be bride, a 35-year-old Romanian woman, was questioned and later released.
Officers from the Home Office Immigration Enforcement team attended the registration office in Commercial Street at around 3pm.
The swoop took place after officers received a tip-off that the relationship may not be genuine.
Adam Scarcliffe, from the Home Office Immigration Enforcement team, said: “Anyone in the UK illegally and seeking to evade our immigration laws should take heed of this latest operation.
“Expect to be caught by us and removed from the UK.”
