A “great entry” of junior Shetland ponies came forward for judging at the Central Scotland Shetland Pony Group’s 2014 youngstock event.
The annual show, at Caledonian Mart in Stirling, was officiated by breed enthusiast Derek Burnett, of Arn Place, Udny Station, Ellon.
Sweeping the board of the miniature entries was Adele Stewart’s three-year-old chestnut filly Narinian Lottie, from Elcho Farm, the Rhynd, Perth.
Lottie was one of the last Shetland ponies to be bred under the Narinian prefix by its founder the late Sam Macarthur, in Nairn, before he retired and the mantle for the stud was passed to his son David and daughter-in-law Emma.
Sam bred Lottie out of the Doonies Rab daughter Cilla of Tulloch, and she was sired by Firth Jason (by Firth Golden Fleece). Lottie stood miniature champion during the summer for Adele at Central and West Fife and Perth shows and also
collected a second placing at Braco.
Kirkintilloch-based breed enthusiast Shearer Pitcairn lifted the miniature reserve title.
His winner was the two-year-old filly Eiger Opal, which was bred in Somerset and bought last year.
Opal, which previously won and stood reserve junior champion of the miniature section at the Central Scotland Shetland Pony Group’s summer show, followed her success at Stirling by taking the miniature championship at the Winter Fair, which relocated for 2014 to Lanark Market as the equestrian arm of the LiveScot event.
During the summer, she also stood miniature reserve at Dumfries.
In the standard ring Mr Burnett took Lucy Poett’s home-bred Harviestoun Sardinia through a clean sweep of classes to stand black pony supreme.
Lucy, who runs her famed Harviestoun Shetland Pony Stud outside Dollar, bred the three-year-old filly from the Harviestoun Phoenix-daughter Harviestoun Sardi.
Sardinia, which was sired by Harviestoun Precocious, this year took a fourth place at the National Stallion Show and won her class at Braco. She won the novice junior standard black championship at the Group’s Summer Show when she was a yearling.
Senga Murray, from Kinross, took the standard black reserve with her previously unshown yearling filly Orkney’s Primrose.
Meanwhile, Ian Spence and Sue Pye’s two-year-old filly Warrackston Tiger Lily took the coloured standard tricolour.
This filly, which was previously reserve supreme junior champion at the Group’s show during the summer, has a string of top championship wins to her credit.
The May-born daughter of Tarves of Hutton, home-bred by Ian out of Tay of Hutton, stood reserve supreme at the Grampian Foal Show last year. Prior to that, Tiger Lily was the overall champion of the Tayside Foal Show, back in 2012, and took the championship at the Royal Northern Spring Show in 2013. She has also been a winner at Brodie and the Black Isle shows.
