Train travellers go back in time on Caledonian Railway
ByGraeme Strachan
A series of events thrilled steam and diesel enthusiasts at Brechin’s popular Caledonian Railway at the weekend.
The weekend got under way in glorious sunshine on Saturday with a 1960’s diesel locomotive pulling carriages between Brechin and Bridge of Dun Station.
The vintage 1960’s Basin Rambler bus was on hand to ferry passengers to nearby places of interest when they reached the newly-refurbished station.
Later, passengers wolfed down a traditional British tea on the popular Fish and Chip Special steam train. The weather might have been poor but diesel services resumed on the four-mile railway line.
The Brechin to Montrose branch line was closed to passengers in the early 1960s as a result of the Beeching cuts but remained open to freight traffic until 1981 when it was preserved by Caledonian Railway (Brechin) Ltd.
In 1993 the railway received a Light Railway Order which allowed trains to operate the line to Bridge of Dun.
