DNA tests in bid to solve Arbroath cliffs mystery sighting
ByThe Courier Reporter
DNA tests are being carried out in the search for answers to an Arbroath cliffs mystery.
A distinctive blue/grey and white Lee Cooper cardigan, a pair of glasses and a half eaten McDonald’s meal were found as part of a full-scale Saturday search after a member of the public reported seeing a body in the water north of the town.
The coastguard, RNLI and police were joined by a helicopter in the sweep of the coastline after the alarm was raised around 6.30pm.
The operation involved the all-weather lifeboat stationed in Arbroath Bingo Lifeline and inshore lifeboat Robert Fergusson along with the search and rescue helicopter deployed from HMS Gannet.
The search was stood down at 10.30pm and lifeboat crews were mustered again around 7am on Sunday but returned after around three hours.
Although no body was found, the items recovered from the area are now being forensically examined.
Police have said that they have received no missing person reports but it is understood that the possibility of the sighting being a seasonal worker is among the theories under consideration.
Police have renewed an appeal for anyone with information to contact them.
