Politics meets Dundee in Armando Iannucci’s US comedy hit Veep

Alan Partridge famously drove to Dundee barefoot after suffering a nervous breakdown.
Now one of Partridge’s writers is ending every episode of his hit new show in the city.
Armando Iannucci is perhaps best known as the creator and writer of The Thick of It, the popular satire starring future Doctor Who Peter Capaldi as the foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker.
But he is also enjoying transatlantic success with the HBO comedy Veep. That show stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, best known to sitcom fans as Elaine Benes in Seinfeld, as US Vice-President Selina Meyer.
Remarkably, Dundee gets a mention in every single episode even if the City of Discovery has been given something of a makeover.
Iannucci said: “We had to come up with a company name and a logo at the end of the Veep credits.
“So I called our company ‘Dundee’ and the logo is a massive futuristic cityscape with the word ‘Dundee’ across it.
“I love that it goes out across America at the end of every episode.”
Last week soldier Christian Nock walked into the city while barefooted and eating a Toblerone as a homage to Partridge’s Dundee links.
