A former Dundee man who emigrated to Canada almost 60 years ago is hoping to meet old friends when he returns to his home city next month.
Bruce Braid, 81, left the city as a 23-year-old in 1955 to find a better life across the Atlantic.
On the voyage he met his future wife Barbara, who was returning to Canada after spending three months in Europe.
He first settled in Calgary, Alberta, and then moved east to Ontario, where he and Barbara were married. They went on to have three sons.
Mr Braid still has relatives in Dundee and has been back several times, but has not been able to meet any of his former workmates in the Dundee printing trade.
“I served my apprenticeship as a compositor at WH Cox in Tay Street. That took six years and was interrupted by two years in the RAF in Germany,” he explained.
“After becoming a journeyman I was hired by Burns and Harris where I worked until I emigrated to Calgary, Alberta.
“My wife and I have been back numerous times. My only regret is I have tried unsuccessfully to find some of my friends but they’ve not been in the telephone book.
“I remember Hamish Martin and Bob Allan, who moved to Hartlepool. There are a number of others, mainly from the printing industry that I would like to see again.”
Mr Braid has a sister May and an aunt who live in Broughty Ferry.
His family grew up on the top floor of the former Dundee Eastern Co-Operative Society in Peter Street. Their father was caretaker at the Co-op and Bruce attended Victoria Road, Cowgate and Stobswell schools.
He can be contacted by email up to the end of this month on brucebraid@rogers.com.
