Plastic bag tied over cat’s head in ‘barbaric’ attack

Home and safe: Hamish with Kerri after his ordeal.

A Tayport animal lover has described an attack on her defenceless cat as “barbaric”.

Distressed Hamish arrived home last Tuesday wrapped up in metal wire and with a plastic bag deliberately tied over his head.

His horrified owner Kerri O’Neil said she was disgusted at the attack. The mother-of-three has described her horror at what had happened to her much-loved four-year-old black and white pet.

“I am an animal lover and can’t believe anyone would do something like this,“ she said, explaining that Hamish was on the mend but very scared and wary.

Kerri saw Hamish around 3pm that day when he was unharmed but only two and half hours later he returned home with his head encased in a plastic bag.

His back leg was caught in his collar as he desperately tried to free himself. The case has prompted the Scottish SPCA to launch an investigation.

Deputy Chief Superintendent Tom Gatherer described it as disgraceful act which would have caused Hamish a great deal of terror and suffering.

“Hamish was able to jump up on to the windowsill of his home and he crashed into the window, alerting his owner to his ordeal.

“If Hamish hadn’t been found he would have suffocated and he could also very easily have been knocked over as he wouldn’t have been able to see where he was going.”

More worryingly, this was not the first time Hamish had been injured. When he was eight months old, Kerri said he had returned home bleeding heavily from his rear end.

Mr Gatherer said: “The vet said it was possible Hamish had been kicked and we do have to consider that these two incidents may be linked.

“It is difficult to understand why anyone would do this to a defenceless animal and we need to identify the person responsible.
