The St Andrews breakfast event to celebrate the royal wedding has been hailed as the town’s “largest and most joyous” civic gathering for decades.
Prince William and Kate Middleton met at the town’s university and thousands gathered on Friday to wish them the best for the future.
Organising committee chairman Kyffin Roberts said, “What was initially conceived as a small-scale event turned into a huge day-long celebration in the sun, attended by thousands and seen by countless millions across the globe. We are now reflecting on not just a successful party but on an occasion which truly brought together our town as a community.”
Crowds thronged St Salvator’s Quadrangle from 7.40am to 4pm. It is estimated that more than 4000 people attended during the day, with over 2000 enjoying a free breakfast.Click here for a full photo galleryAround 500 singers, musicians and dancers entertained the crowds before and after the wedding, which was beamed in on a giant screen. The occasion was covered by national and international television and by a throng of visiting journalists and photographers.
Mr Roberts praised the organisations and community groups who provided sponsorship, in-kind support and people power for the event, and thanked all those who attended.
A memorable period for St Andrews was summed up by a certain Scottish cartoon character. In a commemorative postcard handed out to revellers leaving the breakfast, Oor Wullie says, “Whit a braw spread it’s been a breakfast fit for a king!”
