Newburgh exhibition to explain impact of community wind farm

Residents in Newburgh will find out more about plans for a community wind farm at an exhibition on Thursday, January 20.

Specialists from Atmos Consulting, which has been commissioned to carry out pre-planning work, will be on hand to answer any questions.

A spokesman for Newburgh Community Trust said, “If this proposed community-owned wind farm goes ahead, it will be the first project of its kind in east Scotland.

“Our community will be playing its part in supplying clean and renewable energy, and the financial benefits will come back to local people. I hope that as many local people as possible will drop in to the open day and exhibition, as we’re very keen to gauge local opinion on this proposal.”

An environmental impact assessment will be required to support the planning application and work has already been undertaken.

Meanwhile Sustainable Newburgh, which was established by the trust, is drawing up a community wish list of potential carbon cutting measures for the town and surrounding area.

The income from the wind farm, if it is given the go-ahead, could be used to fund these measures, which could include discount schemes for home and business heating and insulation, establishment of food and produce schemes and a campaign to reopen the local railway station.

People are invited to attend the open day and exhibition in Tayside Institute Community Centre between 11.30am and 8pm and give their views.Opinions can also be submitted to either group by emailing newburgh@atmosconsulting.com, by leaving a letter addressed to Newburgh Community Trust in the community centre or downloading survey forms at sustainablenewburgh.org.uk.
