Dundee United chief says ‘interest remains’ in Australian link

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has confirmed his “interest remains” in football Down Under.

The Tangerines supremo is keen on exploring the Australian option and has been linked with A-League side Newcastle Jets in particular.

He said: “There is an opportunity for someone in Australia with one or two clubs. It’s well documented the club I’m looking at. The interest remains.

“I have been over to Australia a few times. I initially went across to build relationships and see if there’s anything we could bring from across there.

“It’s always good to look at how things are done elsewhere and see if you can pick up ways to improve.

“We used to do the same in retailing all the time,” said the former Morning Noon and Night director. “I was looking at building partnerships, perhaps bringing players across from there to sell on.

“But things have moved on from that. There would be benefits for both sides. We could use our football knowledge from across here and add it to theirs.

“We could potentially bring players across they will always move on from Australia and that would mean they would come here rather than go anywhere else.

“The game is really taking off over there, the crowds are up 15% recently and they have a better TV deal than we have.

“The passion in the area for football is quite incredible.

“Football isn’t the number one sport but there are something like 65,000-70,000 registered kids playing the game.

“It’s becoming the number one participation sport. The game is on the rise there.”
