Bric-a-brac blunder leaves pensioner stuck without stick

Jane Buchanan.

A desperate Fife pensioner has appealed for the safe return of her walking stick after it was sold for 20p as bric-a-brac at a market.

Jane Buchanan was horrified to learn her beloved walking aid had been sold by accident during the Fife Folk Museum Midsummer Market in Ceres.

The 71-year-old, from Ladybank, was unable to help out at the market as she was in hospital at the time. She had given her stick to other volunteers to use as a display to hang jewellery on.

Unfortunately, it was ultimately placed on the bric-a-brac stall instead, where an unsuspecting customer promptly snapped it up for the bargain price of just 20p.

Although the walking stick is not worth much in monetary terms, Jane said she would dearly love to have it back as it is an important family heirloom.

“It is just an ordinary walking stick but it has sentimental value,” she said. “It was my mother’s before it was mine.”

Jane hopes the visitor to Saturday’s event may be persuaded to return the stick, and said she would be happy to buy it back.

“It is about 4ft-long with a curved handle,” she added.

“I would be more than happy to pay the person who bought it more than they paid for it just to have it back.”
