Brechin man has ‘fallen back into offending’, court is told

A Brechin man admitted a string of offences at Arbroath Sheriff Court.

Robert Anderson, 21, of Southesk Street, admitted on June 17 at the Co-Operative at Basin View, Montrose, he stole a quantity of alcohol.

He also admitted on June 18 at Murray Street, Montrose, he took a Ford Transit minibus without the owner’s consent or lawful authority and drove on various roads without insurance or a driving licence.

He further admitted that on Thursday at Hume Street, Montrose, he hired a taxi to Southesk Street, Brechin, without paying or intending to pay the £18.70 fare.

Defence agent Billy Rennie said his client had Asperger’s Syndrome and learning difficulties. He said Anderson was subject to a community payback order.

He added: “There are ongoing problems and it was hoped that the community payback order could help address there.

“Unfortunately, he has fallen back into offending. His mother has gone to England and his benefits are paid to her.

“He tells me that the thefts have been to fund his general living expenses.”

Sheriff Alison Stirling deferred sentence for social work reports until July 16.

She granted bail with the condition Anderson does not enter the Co-Op store in Basin View, Montrose and that he be subject to a curfew at his bail address between 7pm and 7am.
