A mountain rescue team saved the day after a dog collapsed when his owner took him out to search for another missing pet.

Experienced walker Andy Lawson had taken his golden retriever Beinn out looking for lab cross Benji, who had been missing for several days.

But Andy was forced to call the emergency services when his beloved seven-year-old pet began suffering ill-effects from the heat.

Mountain rescue teams rushed to the Coire Domhain area, north of Pitlochry, at around 3.30pm and stretchered the stricken pooch from the mountainside.

He was later treated by a vet and is thought to be on the way to recovery, though Andy has vowed to only take him on beach walks from now on.

Stuart Johnston, head of Tayside Mountain Rescue, led nine members in Friday’s rescue.

He said: “There was a gentleman who was hill-waking with his dog and the dog had suffered from a heat-related collapse.

“The dog was unable to carry on with the journey back to the road and, as he was some distance from the road, Tayside Mountain Rescue came out.

“The gentleman was well prepared, very well organised and knew exactly where he was on the map.

“We found him and stretchered the dog to a Land Rover track, then extracted him back to the road where he was then taken off to the local veterinary practice for a check-up.

“The owner was out looking for a friend’s dog which had gone missing there three days prior to his visit to the area.

“I have no update on whether that animal has been found.”
