Tributes have been paid following the tragic death of a young Angus woman near Glasgow city centre.
The body of 20-year-old Meryl McMartin, from Kirriemuir, was found near a bridge over the M8 near the city’s St George’s Road just over a week ago.
Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the Glasgow University student, who was just completing her third year studies in molecular and cellular biology.
Police had launched an appeal for the public’s help following the discovery of the young woman’s body in New City Road on June 20 and have confirmed a report will, as is the case in all sudden deaths, be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Family members were too upset to speak about the loss of a ‘much-loved and precious’ daughter and sister, but devastated friends of the former Webster’s High School pupil have posted heartfelt online tributes.
Dr Rob Aitken, head of Glasgow University’s school of life sciences, said staff and students had been stunned by the tragedy involving a popular and capable student.
He said: “The life sciences community at the university is large but close-knit and staff and students from Meryl’s class are deeply saddened by her tragic death.
“Meryl was a popular, sociable member of her third-year class.”
