Depute Provost of Fife Kay Morrison praised the work of “indefatigable” volunteers when she officially reopened Craigtoun Park in St Andrews.
The ceremony was the culmination of a spirited effort by the Friends of Craigtoun group to save the park after budget cuts meant Fife Council could no longer afford to maintain it.
Ms Morrison said: “The word indefatigable applies very accurately for that particular group.
“Sometimes, I’m certain, it must have seemed absolutely impossible because of the size of the park but they’ve done it. For the last 18 months to two years the friends have been working incredibly hard.
“It’s looking breathtakingly beautiful and there are lots of activities to attract families.”
The return of the park’s miniature train was a major boost ahead of the reopening. The locomotive had been left to rust in a shed for years but was restored thanks to the generosity and mechanical skills of staff at Cairnsmill Caravan Park.
