A man who struck a police officer in the groin with his knee appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court.

Colin Macdonell, 40, admitted attacking the male officer outside his home in Lordburn Place in the early hours of Tuesday. He further admitted repeatedly kicking and striking his own door and punching the windows.

The court heardMacdonell had been out drinking separately from his partner of 13 years on Monday night.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said: “The accused came home around 12.30am and began banging at the window and shouting.

“His partner went to the back door, at which time the accused began banging on the back door and shouting and swearing. She was scared and called the police.”

Officers arrived and found Macdonell clearly under the influence of alcohol and exhibiting “unpredictable” behaviour.

After being restrained, he began to swear and lashed out at the officers, striking one in the groin with his knee. He was arrested and made no reply to caution and charge.

Defence agent Billy Rennie said Macdonell’s partner was likely to welcome him back.

Sheriff William Wood bailed Macdonell to an address in Hayshead Road, Arbroath, and deferred sentence to July 30.
