Arise Sir Andy Murray? PM hints at honour for Wimbledon champion

Andy Murray is unsure whether winning Wimbledon makes him worthy of a knighthood but the Prime Minister has already dropped a heavy hint that it might be on the way.
The Dunblane star returned to the All England Club this morning after celebrating his stunning victory over Novak Djokovic at the Champions’ Ball.
Murray defeated the world number one 6-4 7-5 6-4 to end Fred Perry’s 77-year reign as the last British winner of the men’s singles title.
Speculation has already started that Murray, who was made an OBE after winning Olympic gold and the US Open last summer, will be knighted in the New Year Honours.
Murray said: “It’s a nice thing to have or be offered. I think just because everyone’s waited for such a long time for this, that’s probably why it will be suggested but I don’t know if it merits that.”
But David Cameron has fuelled speculation that the Scot will be recommended for a knighthood.
The Prime Minister said honours were decided independently but “I can’t think of anyone who deserves one more”.
He said Murray’s victory “lifted the spirits of the whole country”.
