‘Confused’ layout to blame for A9 crashes, says MSP

The confused layout of Scotland’s most dangerous road has been blamed for the latest tragedy.

Three people were killed on Tuesday evening after two cars collided on the A9 near Ralia, between Newtonmore and Kingussie.

Police said there had been four occupants in a dark blue Audi A4 a husband and wife and two daughters.

The woman and one young girl died at the scene; the man and other young girl were seriously injured.

The second vehicle, a silver Jeep, contained a husband and wife. The man died at the scene and the woman remains in hospital.

In the aftermath, Mid-Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser said: “Once again the A9 has played host to another terrible tragedy and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who have lost their lives.

“Although the details of Tuesday evening’s crash are unknown, it must be noted that this incident took place on a single-carriageway stretch of road.

“I do not believe that this is a simple coincidence as the confused configuration of the A9 leads to far too many accidents.

“It is extremely sad to see three innocent lives taken on this road again and reinforces the need for changes to be made to prevent future heartbreak.”

The police said families of the victims were still being informed.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101.
