A fire broke out in a Dundee pensioner’s bedroom, sparking a search for his son who was believed to be inside.
The fire took hold in the first-floor flat of the four-floor block at Craigiebank shortly after 11.30pm on Friday night.
The occupant, who was in his seventies, had managed to escape but tried several times to re-enter the blazing property to find his son, who had been at home when he went to bed.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the flat to search for the man, but it was quickly established there was no one inside.
The fire was contained to the bedroom of the flat, which was completely destroyed.
All residents were accounted for and fire crews were on the scene until 1.20am making the area safe.
Three fire service appliances were sent and Graeme Nicoll, one of the firefighters on the scene, said: “The fire was contained to the bedroom and everything within was virtually destroyed.
“During the fire the heat caused the window to blow out. The remainder of the property had significant smoke damage.”
Upstairs neighbours became alarmed during the incident on opening their front doors and discovering smoke pouring through the stairwell.
One woman and a child were checked over for smoke inhalation but were given the all-clear by paramedics at the scene.
Police also attended and were involved in tracing the man believed to have been inside, who had left the house after his father was asleep.
Mr Nicol said: “There has been an initial investigation but we are still working with Police Scotland to establish the cause of the fire.”
He added that early indications were that it was not started deliberately.
The home owner has been rehoused while his flat is restored.
The Scottish Fire Service is keen to encourage more people to take part in a free home safety visit to reduce the chance of fire in the home.
