Arbroath FC’s greatest goalscorer has become the latest figure to wish the Lichties well as they bid to lift their first trophy in 133 years of existence.

Jimmy Jack, who hit the back of the net 120 times for the Gayfield outfit between 1965 and 1971, was speaking ahead of Saturday’s local derby with Montrose.

A home win against Ray Farningham’s men and Albion Rovers dropping points against Queen’s Park, would secure the third division title and Jack is hoping the club’s squad will make history.

He said, “I wish the club all the best and I will be looking for the result.

“I remember them winning the reserve championship in 1965 but if they win this will be the first time they have actually won the league.

“I imagine they will win they have a good chance as they are at home. I just hope they don’t throw it away.”

Jack, who still lives in Angus, also tipped star striker Gavin Swankie to lead the Lichties to glory against their bitter rivals.

He said, “I think Swankie will be fired up for the Montrose game.

“Hopefully there will be quite a good crowd there too. They have been having a good season and obviously winning quite a lot so a lot of people should come along.

“It helps that it’s a local derby as a lot of people will want to go because it’s Montrose.”

Jack is also no stranger to winning promotion with the Gayfield club, having played an integral part in the 1967/68 campaign during Albert Henderson’s era.

He and strike partner Dennis Bruce notched up 65 of 87 league goals to ensure a place in Scottish football’s top flight.

The club have gained promotion seven times but in all of these cases the honour has been achieved via the play-offs or runners-up places.

The team have also never won a senior cup competition, although they reached the semi-final stages of both the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.
