The Rangers Supporters Trust has responded to ArabTRUST’s reporting of Light Blues’ fans for alleged sectarian singing by making an allegation of its own.
In the wake of last week’s 4-0 win for the Ibrox team at Tannadice, the Dundee United supporters’ trust contacted the SPL, SFA and the police to complain about the content of songs heard during the match.
United chairman Stephen Thompson distanced the club from the trust’s action, stressing it did not speak on behalf of the Tangerines and that relations with Rangers are good.
However, the RST yesterday issued a statement condemning ArabTRUST for, it claimed, using the term “Hun” on its official Facebook and Twitter pages on the internet, amid other allegations.
It read, “The RST are aware of the statement released by the ArabTRUST regarding sectarian singing at Tannadice on Tuesday, April 19.
“The RST agree with the ArabTRUST that we should work together to eradicate all forms of prejudice in society.
“However, we are disappointed they focused solely on the Rangers support while ignoring offensive and sectarian singing from the Dundee Utd stands, along with objects thrown towards Rangers players.
“We are also disappointed the ArabTRUST have often used the term ‘Hun’ on their official Facebook and Twitter pages.
“There is no doubt ‘Hun’ is an offensive sectarian insult as proven in a court of law by Sheriff Iain Peebles and by anti-sectarian charity Nil By Mouth.
“The RST are working with the relevant authorities on our concerns and we will update our members in due course of any action.”
Meanwhile, there is to be a contest for the chairmanship of ArabTRUST between incumbent Stephen Simpson and Mike Barile, who until recently represented the trust on the United board as an associate director.Other trust members can still put their names forward for election before the ballot is held next week.
