The artists who led the creation of a gateway sculpture to Kirriemuir’s Peter Pan play area has added her voice to the local anger and disappointment expressed after vandalism at The Hill.
Maureen Crosbie said she shared the community’s disgust after a mosaic plinth was targeted by vandals who have broken off pieces on the sides of the design.
The project took around four months to complete, but such was the enthusiastic response from local youngsters wishing to be part of the final push that the end result was put together over one weekend instead of two last autumn.
“Children worked on the designs in the schools beforehand and then we had a full weekend putting these very little pieces on to the mosaic,” said Maureen, a local teacher. “I am very disappointed about what has happened it was such a good community project in which adults and children pulled together.
“I really thought we had the community on board and yet it only takes the actions of one or two to spoil the whole thing, so it’s very sad that this is what has happened.
“At the time there were people who warned that it would maybe become a target for vandals but, having seen the enthusiasm which was put into the project, I said that I thought and hoped that wouldn’t be the case. Sadly I have been proved wrong.
“But it will be repaired we are not going to let whoever did this get away with it. If it was kids who did this that’s all the more disappointing because there were so many good youngsters who were involved in designing and creating it.
“And the chances are that I may have taught them locally, so that’s also very disappointing for me.”
