Former Dundee High School maths teacher Isobel Anderson

Miss Isobel Anderson, a long-serving mathematics teacher at Dundee High School, has died at the age of 87.

A legendary figure at the school with which she had a lifelong association, she maintained friendships with many of her pupils long after they left.

She took great interest in their progress and the regard she held for them was reciprocated in the volume of letters and Christmas cards they sent to her every year.

Born in the city, she won a bursary at primary school to attend Dundee High where she excelled in maths. She went on to St Andrews University (Queen’s College, Dundee) and graduated with honours.

Her first teaching post was at Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry and after five years she moved to the high school where she spent the rest of her career.

Her colleagues held her in high regard for her kind and modest manner and teaching ability, and she was a staff member who commanded considerable respect and affection for her contribution to the school.

Away from school and in her retirement, Miss Anderson enjoyed many holidays abroad and was also fond of the Cotswolds and Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria. She also loved driving and made many journeys to the Scottish Highlands.

Music was one of her interests and she regularly attended Royal Scottish National Orchestra concerts in the Caird Hall as well as amateur musical society performances and plays at Perth and Pitlochry theatres.

She was a volunteer at the Save the Children Fund shop in Gray Street, Broughty Ferry, for many years and served on the local fundraising committee.

A member of St Luke’s and Queen Street Church in Broughty Ferry, she was a member of the guild and supported many of the church’s fundraising events.

Miss Anderson lived in Broughty Ferry with her sister Etta, who died over two years ago. Her funeral is private at her own request.
