Fans awaken to Star Wars mania

Star Wars mania is back as tickets for The Force Awakens go on sale.

The eagerly-anticipated next chapter in the Star Wars story opens in cinemas around the world on December 17 with a new trailer for the film racking up millions of views in a matter of hours.

Tens of thousands of fans snapped up tickets for midnight screenings to make sure they will be among the first to see the next chapter in the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo et al.

Although it is still two months until the film is released, anticipation reached fever pitch as a new poster was also released on Monday morning and the official trailer aired for the first time during half-time of the New York Giants versus Philadelphia Eages American football match last night.

Some fans found themselves on the path to the Dark Side as they struggled to book tickets, however.

Huge demand led many cinema websites to crash, leaving fans fearful and then angry at the prospect of missing out.

In Dundee, the Odeon was not the cinema fans were looking for at all.

There will be no midnight screening at its Douglasfield branch.

Instead, it will allow the Jedi to awaken slightly later and have its first screening at 9.15 in the morning.

Fortunately for fans desperate to see the sequel, set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, their only other hope, the Cineworld at Campderdown, will show the film at five minutes past midnight on December 17. The cinema is offering 2D and 3D screenings.

Those seeking a rather more upmarket way to enjoy the film can head to Perth Playhouse where there will be a canape and prosecco reception ahead of a midnight IMAX screening of the The Force Awakens.
