Dumbarton 0 Cowdenbeath 0: Blue Brazil ‘move in the right direction’

It was bewildering that such a terrific contest littered with chances, missed opportunities and bad luck ended goalless.

Blue Brazil boss Colin Cameron said: “We pressed them higher up the park in the second half. It was a hard-fought point and a clean sheet.

“That’s two draws away from home, but more importantly three games without defeat, so it’s a move in the right direction.”

Cowdenbeath should and could have snatched their first away victory of the season, the defining moment coming in 74 minutes when Kane Hemmings headed perfectly for defender John Armstrong, unmarked in front of goal, but goalkeeper Jamie Ewings blocked.

Armstrong believes the Fifers’ first away win of the campaign is just around the corner. Dumbarton were first to show any menace after 15 minutes with two efforts in the space of a few seconds.

Jordan Kirkpatrick sent a terrific hooked shot from 15 yards crashing off the crossbar and then Mark Gilhaney had his curling right-foot shot from the edge of the area turned round a post by goalkeeper Thomas Flynn.

The Sons, looking to end a run of four successive home defeats, passed up a great chance in 38 minutes when Kirkpatrick sent Mitch Megginson through on goal, but somehow he slipped the ball wide.

Three minutes after the restart the Blue Brazil sprung to life when Jamie Stevenson was just off the mark with a magnificent effort from fully 40 yards which drifted just over.

The best chance fell to ’Beath defender Jon Armstrong in 58 minutes when he latched on to a header by Morton, but goalkeeper Jamie Ewings dived at his feet to block.

There were chances aplenty at both ends, and in 62 minutes Megginson used his strength to hold off Armstrong, but his low right-foot shot bounced back off the base of the right-hand post.
