BySandra Gray
Tributes have been paid to a stalwart of Perth’s musical circles.
Following a battle with cancer, Sigurd Scott passed away at the Cornhill Macmillan Centre at the age of 77.
A popular figure, he was a founder member of the Perth and Kinross Music Foundation, which helps children from less affluent backgrounds access music tuition, as well as being a great supporter of Perth Festival of the Arts.
Born in 1936 on the island of Stroma to lighthouse keeper John, Mr Scott grew up on some of the most remote islands of Scotland.
He went to Cambridge University and his first teaching post was at Buckhaven High School in Fife.
In 1971, he was appointed head of classics at Perth Academy and he produced and directed for Perth City Operatics, sang with Perth Choral Society and played with Perth Symphony Orchestra, though his great love was Perthshire Brass, accompanying the group on many tours.
His wife Dorothy died after 48 years of marriage in 2009 and Mr Scott’s ashes will be buried alongside her and their son Herries in Dirleton. He is survived by two children, Seonaidh and Whittaker and three grandchildren.
