First Minister Alex Salmond has officially opened a new centre for the development of subsea pipeline technologies.
The Global Pipeline Welding Development Centre in Clydebank is the culmination of a £10 million investment from offshore energy contractor Subsea 7.
Supported by an £800,000 grant from Scottish Enterprise, the centre has created 30 new skilled jobs with opportunities being created for graduate engineers from Dundee, Stirling and other universities.

Steve Wisely, Subsea 7’s executive vice-president of commercial, said: “There are many technical challenges associated with the subsea market as oil and gas discoveries are being made in deeper water and harsher environments.
“The continued development of new pipeline welding technology is therefore a key enabler for Subsea 7 to help meet these challenges where we need to have access to a world-leading research capability.”
